PLEASE JOIN THE HUNGER ARTISTS THEATRE COMPANY FOR OUR SUMMER MUSICAL BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL
JULY 9 - AUGUST 15, 2010
FULLERTON, CA - The Hunger Artists Theatre
Company is proud to present Bat Boy: The Musical for our summer
production. Bat Boy is directed by Hunger Artists Company Member,
Glendele Way-Agle
In Hope Falls, Virginia, a strange
creature is found in a cave. Is it a bat? Is it a boy? It's both! The
Sheriff of the town brings him to the home of the local veterinarian, whose wife
decides to raise the creature and teach him how to be human. As he fights for
acceptance, he and the veterinarian's daughter grow closer which only leads to
disastrous results.
Bat Boy: The Musical was originally
performed on Halloween 1997 at the Actors' Gang El Centro Theatre in Los
Angeles, CA in a production directed by Keythe Farley featuring Deven May as Bat
Boy. In 2001, it was produced in New York at the Union Square Theatre.
Deven May reprised his role as Bat Boy in this production that was directed by
Scott Schwartz. It had it's London premiere in the West End at the
Shaftesbury Theatre in 2004. This production features Stephen Alcantar as Bat Boy and Kathleen Switzer as Meredith Parker. Both are making their Hunger Artists debuts. Managing Director Anthony Galleran appears as Dr. Parker and Jessica Lynch is playing Shelley Parker. Anthony was last seen in this year's production of Buried Child and is directing the upcoming production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Jessica was last seen this spring in Lysistrata and has appeared in many other shows at Hunger Artists. The ensemble consists of Sam McClellan, Carlos Zavala, Duncan Hutchinson, Evie Goode, Gary McKee, Hayley Jackson, Holly Englemann, Jorge Serna, Lauren Kushin, Mark Rosier, Tina Fiala, Steeve Jacobs, Trent Randal, Zed Restauro, and Beth Henderson. Sam McClellan and Lauren Kushin last appeared at Hunger Artists in Lysistrata and Duncan Hutchinson and Hayley Jackson were both in The Ballad of Don Q or 'Sixgun' Q. Mark Rosier played Lazaro in last year's Halloween production of Frankenstein in Love. The rest of the cast is making their Hunger Artists debuts. Bill Wolfe is the Musical Director for Bat Boy: The Musical. Choreography was by Tony Viramontes. The Lighting Designer is Joy Bice. Set Design was done by Glendele Way-Agle and Tony Viramontes and Set Construction was done by Curtis Carpenter. Garrett MacDonald is the Costume Designer. The Bat Boy Band consists of Will Brahm on Lead Guitar, Ben Wallace on Bass Guitar, Todd Gilligan on Drums and Bill Wolfe plays Keyboards and Conducts. In 1992, an article appeared in The Weekly World News about a half bat/half boy that was found in a cave which inspired Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming to write the story for Bat Boy: The Musical. They were later joined by Laurence O'Keefe who wrote the music and lyrics. Flemming is also a filmmaker whose movies include Nothing So Strange and The God Who Wasn't There. He is also a co-founder of the Slumdance Film Festival. O'Keefe written other musicals along with his wife, Nell Benjamin, including Sarah, Plain and Tall and most recently Legally Blonde: The Musical. The thing about this show is that it has many different levels, says director, Glendele Way-Agle. On the surface, it's a funny, clever musical with amazing songs. It's also a very tragic story about an outsider who is trying to fit in and a family that is falling apart. It's even the story of a small town in financial decline that is looking for a scapegoat on which to blame its problems. It's an entertaining and thought provoking piece. Glendele Way-Agle began directing at the Hunger Artists in 2004 with her adaptation The Medea Project, becoming a company member soon after. She also directed an adaptation of Marat/Sade in 2005, Careless Love and The Woman in Black in 2006, Much Ado About Nothing and The Full Monty in 2007, and Vagina Monologues/Marijuanalogues and The Jungle Book in 2008. She directed the production of Lysistrata that was a part of Greek Theatre Festival in February of this year. Bat Boy is the perfect musical for Hunger Artists, says Artistic Director, Amber Scott. It's funny and irreverent, and it uses a ridiculous premise to showcase some very human issues of intolerance and relationships. The music is great and it's just going to be a great time. Performances of Bat Boy: The Musical will take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 7 pm, with a special performance on Thursday, August 12th at 8 pm. General admission tickets are $20; senior and students (with valid ID) may purchase tickets for $18. Tickets for the Thursday performance are $5.
