The Hunger Artists Theater Company is proud to present a festival of short plays dedicated to breaking the norms of traditional theater, Beyond Convention, September 7-30, 2007. With 12 plays written by playwrights from around the country, including four local writers, Beyond Convention will be presented over two separate evenings and features three world premieres.

Performance 1 features Down by Eric Czuleger, directed by Glendele Way-Agle. When Mom’s out back digging graves, but what happens when her son refuses to dig his? In Angles of Separation by Brendan Healy, directed by Arash Karimi, each new angle of the body explores new light of a relationship on the streets. William Campbell’s It Ain’t My Time, directed by Tony Viramontes finds the devil deciding to give a man several more chances at living his life. Riding the train to work, a man discovers that his coffee means more than he thinks in the world premiere production of Sumatra Mandheling by Jakob Holder, directed by Jeremy Gable. In Thing Quartet by Mark Harvey Levine, directed by MaryAnne Mosher, four women create music with overlapping dialogue and thoughts. And the world premiere of Drama of Reproduction, a movement piece by Maureen Brady Johnson, directed by Kelly Flynn, explores the many mysteries of corporate reproduction.

Performance 2 includes Yelena Moskovich’s The Sandwich Conscience, directed by Brey Barrett, in which a man relives his experiences in Vietnam while making a sandwich. The First Day of School by Steven Schutzman, directed by Susan Marx, questions whether a couple can cope with their twins starting the first day of school? Respect for the Field of Electric Horses by Lisa Meyer and directed by Jill Johnson explores love and the connections between people. In the world premiere of Next Time by Lee Wochner, directed by Chrisina Acero, a man talks to his conscience to try and discern what is real and what is created. In David Holstein’s Saints in Strange Places, directed by Ted Leib, miracles and jealousy abound when a man starts birthing puppies. And The Viscous Cycle by Lucas Leyva, directed by Tira Palmquist tells the story of particles of water attempt to stop traveling the water cycle. Can they avoid their fate?

The 12 plays in Beyond Convention feature a talented ensemble cast including Brey Barrett, Albert Bohorquez, Jacqueline Bustamante, Katie Chidester, Brennan Cipollone, Angel Correa, Leonard Joseph Dunham, Jeremy Gable, Doug Gaynor, Ginger Johnson, Scott Keister, Jessica Lynch, Garrett McDonald, Parker Morrison, Tracy Rowe Mutz, Lisa Navarro, Amber Scott, Jay Wallace, Maile Walker and Glenda Wright.

Produced by Hunger Artists Managing Director Emily Brauer Rogers, Beyond Convention features Costumes by Debbie Dufour, Sound Design by Christina Acero and Lighting Design by Brauer Rogers.

“We received more than 100 submissions from all over the world for Beyond Convention,” says Brauer Rogers, “so you can imagine how difficult it was to narrow them down to these 12 plays. The incredible range of ideas, styles and subject matter makes this festival a true celebration of new plays and playwrights that we are very proud to present.”

Performances of Beyond Convention will take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 7 pm. There will be two special “$5.00 Night” performances on Thursday September 20 & 27 at 8 pm.
