FULLERTON, CA – The Hunger Artists Theatre Company is proud to present the second installment of its original one-act festival Beyond Convention. The festival, produced by Managing Director Emily Brauer Rogers, runs from November 14th to November 23rd. The 11 plays presented in the festival vary wildly in mood, plot and theme. However, one element flows through all of the works: they break theatrical form. This year’s festival – among other things - features a game of Twister, fortune cookies, juggling, Dr. Seuss-style rhyming, opera divas and a very unusual conference call. The plays presented will be 8:55, Tech Center Drive (by Eric Eberwein), Breakfast With Warhol (by Christopher Lockheardt), Darktime in Skipland (by Jakob Holder), Flea (by Francesca Sanders), Fortune (by Jill Matzkanin), Henry and Johanna (by Lisa Meyers), Moon’s Interview (by Robin Pond), The Remote (by Mark Harvey Levine), Twisted Love (by Ed Valentine), What’s The Meta?(by Andrew Biss) and Yes To Everything 2: Son Of Everything (by Philip Dawkins). The directors include Brey Barrett (What’s The Meta?), Kelly Flynn (Breakfast With Warhol), Jeremy Gable (Darktime in Skipland), Anthony Galleran (The Remote), Susan Marx (Fortune), Garrett T. McDonald (Henry and Johanna), MaryAnne Mosher (Moon’s Interview), Tira Palmquist (Twisted Love), Amber Scott (8:55, Tech Center Drive), Maile Walker (Flea) and Glendele Way-Agle (Yes To Everything 2: Son Of Everything). The cast includes a number of Hunger Artists company members, as well as many newcomers, including Brey Barrett, Ponzer Bergman, Claire Broderick, Jennice Butler, Leonard Joseph Dunham, Jeremy Gable, Anthony Galleran, Judy Gish, Duncan Hutchison, Stephen Jones, Zen Josey, Scott Keister, Lauren Kushin, Laura Landry, Christina Martinez, Oscar Martinez, Topher Mauerhan, Parker Morrison, Tara Pitt, Alison Plott, Amber Scott, Tyler Seiple, Kaitlyn Tice and David Yu Stephanie Cooke will serve as Stage Manager for the production. Lighting is designed by Mark Matzkanin and sound design is by Christina Acero.Beyond Convention premiered in September, 2007 at the Hunger Artists Theater Company, featuring 12 plays, many of which were world premieres. Some of the plays have had further success since the festival, such as Lisa Meyers’ Respect For The Electric Field Of Horses, which had its world premiere at Hunger Artists before winning The Blank Theater’s Young Playwrights Festival in Los Angeles and the Young Playwrights, Inc. National Playwrighting Competition in New York City. "Beyond Convention celebrates the theatre not normally seen onstage,” Brauer Rogers said. “We received over 250 scripts from around the world and we've selected 11 of these to highlight in our festival." Emily Brauer Rogers has been Co-Managing Director for the Hunger Artists Theater Company since 2006. She has written for Hunger Artists’ Dead Letter Office and 24 Hour Theater festivals, as well as the 2004 road-trip comedy Searching For Americana. She also co-wrote and directed the world premiere of the Iraq docudrama Hardcore: Women’s Reflections On Iraq. She is the creator and producer of Beyond Convention. “Beyond Convention is quickly becoming one of Hunger Artists’ favorite traditions,” Artistic Director Jeremy Gable said. “This is a chance for us to present some new voices and talent to the Orange County stage, as well as an opportunity for our company to dive head-first into some truly unique material.” "When Emily proposed the first festival, it seemed like a great idea," Gable added. “But I don’t think any of us expected the festival to come off with such great success. We were very happy to be introduced to such unique voices, and have been thrilled to see plays such as Respect For The Electric Field Of Horses move on to find bigger audiences. Scheduling the festival for 2008 was a no-brainer, and we’re pleased to announce that after this festival – which has an awesome line-up of shows – we’ll be including it in the 2009 season, as well.” Performances of Beyond Convention will take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 7 pm. General admission tickets are $15. Patrons may purchase tickets online by visiting our website (www.hungerartists.com). To reserve tickets by phone, please call 714.680.6803.
