TONY-NOMINATED DRAMA ...
FROZEN
May 4 27, 2007
FULLERTON, CA The Hunger Artists Theater Company is proud to announce the Orange
County premiere of Bryony Laverys Tony Award-nominated drama Frozen, May 4-27, 2007.
This premiere production will be directed by Artistic Director Jeremy Gable, who directed
last seasons critically acclaimed Orange County premiere of Sarah Kanes 4.48
Psychosis.
Nominated for the 2004 Tony Award for Best Play, Laverys play takes place in the
aftermath of a 10-year-old English girl's disappearance. Several years later, an American
psychiatrist speaks with both the girl's mother and killer in an attempt to discover if
this
was a crime of evil or a crime of illness.
The three-person ensemble features Katie Chidester (Agnetha Gottmundsdottir), Scott Manuel
Johnson (Ralph Wantage) and Jill Cary Martin (Nancy Shirley). Christina L. Munich is
designing lights for Frozen. Christina Acero serves as production Sound Designer. Jessica
Topliff is Costume Consultant. Set design is by Jeremy Gable and Brey Barrett serves as
production Stage Manager.
Frozen is about as perfect as a play can get. says company Literary Manager
Glendele Way-Agle. It's thought-provoking without being didactic, difficult without
being unbearable, humorous without being inappropriate, hopeful without being
manipulative. It's everything a great piece of theatre should be.
There is very little set and no props, says director Gable. Just like
the characters - who find themselves isolated and stripped of everything they could rely
on - the actors in this production find themselves alone on stage, conjuring up objects
and locations. I find myself blessed to have such a talented cast that's up to the
challenge, as well as an incredible design team to help tell this beautiful story.
Born in 1947, Lavery claim she started writing plays when she got tired of boring roles
(like the left arm of a sofa). She has written 20 since 1976, including The Magic Toyshop
(2001), Illyria (2000), More Light (1997) and The Two Marias (1988) In more recent times,
she has been busy writing film scripts and a biography of Tallulah Bankhead, as well as
writing and directing plays for youth projects.
Lavery has also gotten involved with the Sphinx Theatre Co. which is dedicated to
encouraging and producing new theatre collaborations between leading women artists. She
created two highly-acclaimed works for them, Goliath and A Wedding Story. She has also
been an Artistic Director of Gay Sweatshop and Female Trouble and a teacher of playwriting
at Birmingham University.
