To Hades And Back (Again)

By Katherine Murphy

Directed by Jill Johnson

June 1--June 24

Set in the doomed House of Atreus, To Hades and Back Again has been reworked for our current age of self-aware existential angst. Murphy’s play views the participants of The Oresteia from Cly's point of view: her long-gone warrior husband Aggie, her replacement companion Aeg, the ghost of Cly (and Aggie’s) murdered daughter Iphy, Cly’s half-sister and sister-in-law Helen, and Aggie’s new riddle-spewing “employee” Cass. To Hades plays out the familiar tale of warfare, blood sacrifice, and even bloodier vengeance, while beleaguered servants try to keep it all together. Murphy explores the original sin of pride -- or was it manly posturing? -- and its destructive spiral in family relationships.

‘Art’

By Yasmina Reza

Directed by Katie Chidester

July 6th – July 29th

How much would you pay for a white painting? Three old friends square off over a blank canvas, using it as an excuse to relentlessly batter one another over various failures. As their arguments become less theoretical and more personal, they border on destroying their friendships. Katie Chidester has previously directed The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Buried Child and Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief.

Under the care of celebrated young physician Frederick Treves, Merrick is introduced to London society and slowly evolves from an object of pity to an urbane and witty favorite of the aristocracy and literati only to be denied his ultimate dream, to become a man like any other.  Losing Our Heads:

The Guillotine Play

By Nina Mansfield

Directed by Casey Holm

October 19th – November 18th

A comedy that juxtaposes absurdist vignettes about the bizarre history of the guillotine with the post-beheading loves, lives and struggles of Nick, Marie and Charlotte, historical figures who now exist in a very contemporary version of the afterlife. Beneath its comedic surface, the play examines humanity’s violent history. Casey Holm makes his directorial debut at The Hunger Artists Theatre Company.
